Title in English:

New Educational Orientations in Subsaharian Africa and Place of National Languages and Cultures: A Study of the Togolese Case

Abstract:

The various education systems in Africa, and essentially in sub-Saharan Africa, are faced with a real need to reorganize and adapt to the demands of the current world. Education systems and their adaptation to current requirements are a priority issue and require the involvement of essential elements without which they would be incomplete. Among these elements, languages and cultures are at the forefront. However, since independence, national languages and cultures in sub-Saharan Africa have remained practically on the bangs of education, or have been little involved. This article questions the educational systems in Africa, and specifically the one currently in place in Togo, by highlighting its limitations and proposing new approaches based on a more consistent involvement of the learner's endogenous languages and cultures. The article starts from the conclusions of previous studies, particularly in the context of the cohabitation between national languages and colonial languages. It studies the impact of this cohabitation on education in French-speaking African countries, particularly in Togo. To do so, it uses the results of case studies in selected primary and secondary schools throughout Togo. It uses different notions involved in the acquisition of knowledge or language (Language Acquisition Device: LAD) and other theories of didactics combining the natural abilities of the learner and teaching techniques in order to consolidate the acquisition of knowledge leading to better results than those of the current systems. It leads to the conclusion that the most successful systems would be those involving endogenous languages and cultures and new technologies, but according to well established principles.
