Abstract:

This study examines the phonetic difficulties encountered by second-year students of French as a foreign language (FLE) at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), in the production of the phonemes [ø] and [œ]. Using a read-aloud test consisting of ten items, their mastery of these sounds was evaluated. By way of methodology, a simple random sampling was used to select 140 French teacher training students from an accessible population of 215 respondents who completed their primary education in Ghana and whose mother tongues are Ewe, Akan, or Ga. Students from French-speaking countries were excluded to ensure linguistic homogeneity. The analysis of the results reveals a notable difficulty in the correct production of the targeted phonemes, mainly due to their absence in the participants' first and second languages, as well as a limited phonological awareness that hinders their auditory and articulatory discrimination. These findings highlight the need for specific phonological training within FFL (French as a Foreign Language) programs to improve oral proficiency and reduce the effects of linguistic interference.
