Title:

EQUIVALENCE AND MEANING IN ENGLISH TRANSLATIONS OF MIHAI EMINESCU’S LUCEAFĂRUL

Language of Publication:

English

Abstract:

The article explores the challenges of translating Mihai Eminescu’s masterpieceLuceafărul”, focusing on the difficulties of achieving equivalence and accurately conveying its meanings. As one of the most complex and symbolically rich works in Romanian literature, “Luceafărul” presents significant linguistic, stylistic, and cultural hurdles for translators. The study examines various translations, highlighting issues related to lexical and syntactic fidelity, poetic rhythm, and cultural references. It also discusses how different translators have interpreted the poem’s themes and metaphors, often influenced by their linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Despite inevitable losses in translation, each version contributes to Eminescu’s global recognition, demonstrating the ongoing struggle between linguistic accuracy and poetic expression. The findings underscore the importance of both technical precision and artistic intuition in literary translation.
